Hunnivirus A is a species in the genus
Hunnivirus.
Hunnivirus A originally comprised of two picornaviruses which were identified in apparently healthy
domestic young cattle (Bos taurus) and sheep (Ovis
aries) in Hungary during 2008-2009 (Reuter et al.,
2012). The name was changed in July 2013 from "hungarovirus" at the
request of the ICTV Executive Committee. The name, Hunnivirus, is
derived from Hungary
and Northern
Ireland where the first
three hunniviruses were found. Complete genome sequencing and
comparative analysis showed that these two viruses are related to
each other and have a similar genome organization. At least 12 genotypes
(HuV-A1 to A12) have now been described, including hunniviruses found in rats in Vietnam (Van Dung
et al., unpub.) and a hunnivirus from a pangolin in China (Yang et al.,
2020).
