Rabovirus A is one of four species in the genus Rabovirus.

The near-complete genome of a rat picornavirus from the USA has been determined (Firth et al., 2014). Almost simultaneously, two genomic fragments of a rat picornavirus were identified in 12 Rattus norvegicus in Berlin, Germany (Sachsenröder et al., 2014). Later the complete genome of the now-named rabovirus (RaBoV) was published (Ng et al., 2015). The sequences were most closely related to sapelo- and enteroviruses. Both genome sequences contain an type II-like IRES. Five genetic types RaBoV-A1 to RaBoV-A25 have been described, based on their VP1 sequences.
