Isolated from Ixodes persulcatus ticks taken from
wild boars (Sus scrofa) in the Krasnoyarsk district of the Primorsky
region in the foothills of the mountain range Sikhote-Alin (Russia). The LEIV 113P
(or P-113) strain was isolated on 31 July 1970 from a pool of 10
female ticks (Lvov et al., 1978). The virus was labile at pH 3.0, but
stable between pH 5.0-7.0. Heating at 50 °C inactivated the virus, but
thermostability was increased in the presence of 1M MgCl2. The
virus was pathogenic for suckling and 2-3 week-old mice, but not for adult
mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs rabbits or chick embryos. It did not show
CPE in four types of cell culture (HEp-2, PEK, HEK, GMK).
Serologically related to both
Syr-Darya Valley fever virus and mengovirus (EMCV) by complement fixation but all three are
distinct by cross-neutralization.
The recently determined complete genome
sequence of SAV P-113 (KJ191558;
Alkhovsky et al., unpub.) suggests that it is
a TMEV isolate.
*Also spelt Sikhote-Alyn.
