EV-A71
The Enterovirus A (sero)type enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) causes a variety of neurological diseases including aseptic meningitis, encephalitis and poliomyelitis-like paralysis (Melnick, 1984; Schmidt et al., 1974). EV-A71 is also one of the enterovirus serotypes often associated with hand, foot and mouth disease.  Based on VP1 sequence data, EV-A71 can be divided into four main genotypes, A to D (Deshpande et al., 2003).
