The Enterovirus A (sero)type
enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) causes a variety of neurological diseases
including aseptic meningitis, encephalitis and poliomyelitis-like
paralysis (Melnick, 1984; Schmidt et al., 1974). EV-A71 is
also one of the enterovirus serotypes often associated with hand,
foot and mouth disease. Based on VP1 sequence data, EV-A71 can
be divided into four main genotypes, A to D (Deshpande et al.,
2003).
