Avihepatovirus A (formerly named Duck hepatitis A virus) is a single species in the genus Avihepatovirus. The only member of Avihepatovirus A, duck hepatitis A virus (DHAV), consists of three genotypes, DHAV-1, DHAV-2 and DHAV-3. DHAV-2 and DHAV-3 are both serologically distinct from DHAV-1, but have never been compared with each other. The complete genome sequences of DHAV-1, DHAV-2 and DHAV-3 were first reported by Kim et al. (2006), Tseng & Tsai (2007) and Kim et al. (2007a,b), respectively.

Ding and Zhang (2007) have suggested that DHAV-1 has a short leader polypeptide (30 aa) with a L/G cleavage site  between it and VP0. This would result in a myristoylation motif at the N-terminus of VP0 (GxxxS). These sequences are also conserved in DHAV-2 and DHAV-3.

DHAV-3 has been shown to be the cause of a newly described disease, goose haemorrhagic hepatitis, in China (Liu et al., 2011; JF835025).

Previously, DHAV-1 was named duck hepatitis virus I (DHV-I) and along with DHV-II and DHV-III were considered unclassified picornaviruses causing duck virus hepatitis. Subsequencly, DHV-II and DHV-III were identified as astroviruses.
