The sequences of two viruses detected in feral pigeons (Columba
livia) have been deposited in the public databases (Kofstad and
Jonassen, 2011). The two
viruses are described as pigeon picornavirus A (FR727145)
and pigeon picornavirus B (FR727144).
Both viruses are most closely related to the
sapeloviruses and
enteroviruses. They
also contain in their 3' UTRs an RNA motif called stem-loop-2-like
motif (s2m) whose function is unknown. In fact there are two
tandemly-repeated copies, called (s2M)2. This motif is
also found near the 3' ends of some picornaviruses [equine
rhinitis B virus (ERBV) 1, ERBV-2, ERBV-3,
turdivirus (TV) 2 and TV-3)],
astroviruses, caliciviruses and coronaviruses.
